MITRAL REGURGITATION |
Quotation |

Definition |
A state of incompetence of the mitral valve leading to regurgitation of a fraction of the left ventricular blood flow into the left atrium leading to volume overload on the left ventricle. |
Prognosis |
Pure rheumatic mitral regurgitation progresses very slowly, and is manageable for long periods on medical therapy, but attendant stenosis or aortic valve lesions, or endocarditis could worsen prognosis. Acute MI with acute regurgitation, or endocarditis in an incompetent valve might call for emergency surgey. |
